Timberline Lodge photos, Photos of the Timberline Lodge at Night. The Timberline Lodge on the base of Mt Hood in Oregon is a lodge with a ton of history. Timberline Lodge is a ski and snowboard mountain lodge on the south side of Mount Hood in Oregon, about 60 miles (97 km) east of Portland.
The lodge was built in the late 1930s and now remains as a National Historic Landmark and sits at an elevation of 5,960 feet (1,817 m), within the Mount Hood National Forest and it is accessible through the Mount Hood Scenic Byway. It is a popular tourist attraction, drawing more than a million visitors annually. It is noted in film for serving as the exterior of the Overlook Hotel in The Shining.
I most recently visited the Lodge a few weeks ago to go snowboarding on the glacier at Mt Hood. During my visit I decided to sleep up near the Lodge for a night. The night was amazing because the stars were all out as well as a full moon. There is minimal light pollution at the base of the Mountain so it was easy to capture some great photos of the lodge at night. The most amazing part was that the full moon set on the horizon and represented something I have only seen the sun do. . In other words similar to a sunset, I witnessed a moonset.
